In the early 2000s, keen mermaid swimmers began to develop their own mermaid equipment, and since 2010, mermaid swimming has attracted both recreational swimmers and professional performers. With its increased popularity, organizations like SSI introduced certifications to ensure that swimmers have the knowledge and training necessary to enjoy mermaid activities safely. Your opportunities are only limited by your imagination and your physical capabilities. Mermaiding, freediving, and scuba diving are the “Ultimate Dive Experiences” to be enjoyed with family and friends. Your adventures can take you to the most spectacular places in the world. You can swim past reefs and hover over walls, explore some wrecks and observe marine life. With an underwater camera or video, you can bring back exciting images to remember for a lifetime. You may even decide to become an SSI Dive Professional and enjoy the rewards of teaching the SSI program. Your love of the sea may lead you to the sciences of marine archaeology, marine biology or oceanography. To safely enjoy your mermaid training, you must know what happens to your body when you dive below the surface, and must be able to follow the rules for safe swimming at all times.
